Kwalu Moments Cori Lounge Introduction
People can sense when they’re in an environment that actually supports them. When you think in terms of moments instead of just products, everything changes. At Kwalu, we’re always working on new ways to be there for people. For us, there’s no greater reward than seeing care teams perform their best. And nothing more satisfying than families who are free to focus on each other instead of their worries. After all, we’re not simply outfitting spaces. We’re supporting the people who live, work, and heal in them.

Kwalu Moments Cori Lounge Why Kwalu?
Why Kwalu? Support Every Moment ® In healthcare and senior living environments, every space carries more than function—it carries people, routines, and experiences that happen every day. For more than 40 years, Kwalu has focused on one question: How can furniture better support the people who use it? From the spaces where families gather to the tables where residents start their day, every moment matters. That belief shapes how we design, engineer, and build every product.

Kwalu Moments Cori Lounge Why Kwalu?
Built to last Performance isn’t just about material—it’s about how everything comes together. Kwalu seating features internal steel reinforcement for added strength and stability. Surfaces are engineered to resist chips, cracks, and wear, with components designed to be maintained, not replaced. On seating, chips and scratches can be buffed out. On casegoods and tabletops, Protea Fusion delivers the same durability in applications where layered construction is required. Backed by a 10-year performance warranty covering construction and finish, Kwalu products are built to reduce maintenance, minimize replacements, and extend the life of every space. It’s easy for furniture to look good on Day One. What matters is how it performs over time.

Designed for real life Furniture in these environments doesn’t get a break. It’s used constantly, cleaned relentlessly, and expected to maintain its appearance over time. That’s why we developed Protea™, a proprietary material designed to perform where traditional materials fall short. Non-porous and highly durable, Protea resists moisture, supports infection control, and stands up to rigorous cleaning protocols— while maintaining the warmth and familiarity people expect from wood. Now available in a refreshed palette developed by designer Laura Guido-Clark, Protea continues to evolve alongside the spaces it supports.

Kwalu Moments Patient & Exam Rooms Designing for Outcomes
Patient & Exam Rooms
Designing for the Whole Being Von Robinson, Designer of the Ellie Collection In the patient room, nothing is neutral. Every object has a specific use that shapes the experience for those inside. For Von Robinson, founder of Play Orbit Studio, that understanding defines his approach to furniture design. “Anything you add to a system makes a positive or negative impact. So when you think about the patient room, you have to account for a person’s emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual needs.” Patients are more than bodies receiving treatment. They are whole people managing a range of emotions—from vulnerability and anxiety to dependency and uncertainty—often all at once. “When you ask how we design for someone who does not want to be in that space,” Robinson says, “the answer is simple: treat them at least as well, or better than, we treat them outside of it.” Consider the Ellie patient recliner. What may seem like a secondary element is in fact central to recovery. “The recliner’s role in the space is to get you out of the bed,” Robinson explains. “It is the first step of

feels right,” Graham says, “it gives you a sense that somebody cared enough to design it that way.”
Designer Brian Graham with Ethan Wardrobe
The Beauty of Lasting Design Brian Graham, Designer of the Ethan Collection Despite its compact proportions, few spaces play a larger role in the patient experience than the patient room. As a central connecting point for clinicians, therapists, family members, and the patient themselves, it brings together more people, with more at stake, than virtually any other space. For designer Brian Graham of Graham Design, the movement inside a patient room resembles a dance. “Everybody’s moving around, trying to get out of the way of the person coming in to check on the patient. There’s limited room and a lot of equipment all competing for space.” When designing products for Kwalu, Graham’s goal isn’t to overtake the space but to stabilize it. “You’re in a room that’s beeping and chirping, people coming in and out, sometimes in the middle of the night,” he explains. “So visually, I try to create something calm and ordered.” Nothing in his work feels abrupt or harsh. Each
mobility so that you can then be mobile to leave the room and get back to your life.” Designed with an open sit angle and passive lateral support, Ellie helps patients move, stand, and regain a sense of independence. Patients aren’t the only ones the room needs to support. Family members have a vital role in recovery. Robinson believes the environment should acknowledge this the moment they enter. “They are walking into an alien environment with harsh surfaces, shiny metals, and beeping machines. But they should see something that signals to them that they are welcome.” That welcome goes beyond aesthetics. “We need to treat care partners as egalitarian participants in the healing of this person,” Robinson says. “We all have a role to play.” Providing dignified space for family members to sit, stay, and contribute is how design can honor them. For Robinson, insightful design begins with experience. In a space where every detail matters, he sees through the eyes of patients to turn a negative into a positive.

piece provides structure and stability within a setting that can otherwise feel chaotic. Graham describes this pursuit as “rational softness,” an approach that is both emotional and precise. “Nothing is hard. Everything has some contour to it,” he explains. “But it’s considered. It’s ordered.” In an environment filled with alarms, unfamiliar technology, and constant motion, these decisions send a quiet message: someone thought about this. “When you touch something and it feels right,” Graham says, “it gives you a sense that somebody cared enough to design it that way.” Ultimately, the people in patient rooms are often facing some of the most intense moments of their lives. Designing for those moments doesn’t always require a statement piece; just someone who can see it through their eyes.

Behavioral health environments should feel calm, familiar, and welcoming—supporting safety without letting it define the entire experience. Form, proportion, and material come together to support dignity and hold up to constant use. When a space feels considered, when it feels human, it creates the conditions for better care.

First Five Minutes
Waiting / Lobby
Care begins the moment people arrive. It starts in the waiting room—where people pause and take in everything around them. Families sit together. Patients need space and support. Others may be waiting longer, looking for a place to work or a moment alone. These environments need to feel welcoming and intuitive, while holding up to constant use. When they do, the focus can shift to care.

Kwalu Moments Cori Lounge ROI Story
“Kwalu is the best quality of chair I’ve ever seen,” Sara says. “They handled the weather, the use — everything.”
26
Kwalu Moments ROI Story
30 Years Later: An ROI Story From Bonaire
In 1988, restaurateur Sara Matera and her business partner opened The Green Parrot Restaurant on the sun-soaked island of Bonaire, a Dutch territory in the southern Caribbean near Venezuela. With sweeping views of turquoise water and an open-air dining room seating more than 150 guests, it quickly became a beloved gathering place for locals and travelers alike. Visitors would toss crackers into the sea and watch fish dart in from 100 feet away.
But running a restaurant in paradise came with challenges, especially when it came to furnishing a space exposed to sun, salt air, and constant use. The Green Parrot needed furniture that could hold up not only to the climate, but to daily life at the water’s edge. Enter Kwalu. In 1992, Sara met David Horwitz, founder of Kwalu, at the National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago. Standing on the bottom rung of a chair, he jumped up and down to prove how strong and durable it was. That moment sealed the deal. Sara ordered more than 300 chairs, barstools, and tables — sturdy enough for the restaurant’s guests, and ready for island life. Their strength was tested in unexpected ways. When storms passed and swells from distant hurricanes rolled in, waves sometimes swept chairs into the ocean. Friends with excursion boats would help retrieve them,
returning them to shore to dry and go right back into service. Even after years in the Caribbean climate — and more than a few unplanned trips into the sea — the frames remained solid. Over time, Sara only needed to reupholster the seats. The structure stayed intact, strong, and dependable. The Green Parrot operated until 1999, when a powerful swell from Hurricane Lenny damaged the restaurant beyond repair. Sara eventually retired, but the chairs outlasted the business they were purchased for. “I never expected them to last like that,” Sara reflects. “They really did.” The restaurant is gone, but the chairs continued on — quietly doing their job.
